Project Details
Kingdom converted the Category B listed building to provide 5 self contained flats along with two common areas to provide support for tenants.
Originally known as St Brycedale House the building dates from 1785 and was acquired by John Hunter a local cabinet maker and builder in 1886. Upon his death John Hunter left his house in trust to be converted into a hospital. The house was renamed Hunter Hospital and opened in May 1936. After being a hospital for 56 years it sadly closed in September 1992.
The house remained empty until around 2000 at which point Hunter Hospital was purchased under a joint venture by Fife and Viewpoint Housing Associations. The two wings on either side of the original house were demolished and replaced by two three storey flatted accommodation wings. On completion Viewpoint Housing Association acquired ownership of the original house and one of the new housing wings. Fife Housing Association acquired ownership of the other new housing wing. The original building was renamed to Hunter House following the conversion and newbuild works.
In recent years it has been difficult to find a use for the listed building and has therefore been unoccupied. Viewpoint agreed to sell the original building to Kingdom Housing Association whose conversion help support the Rapid Rehousing Strategy in Fife and ensure its longevity as a classic building in Kirkcaldy town centre.
