Alan is professionally qualified in Town Planning and Social Housing and has a background in community led redevelopment and the financing, development and management of social housing and other community owned assets. He has held a range of senior positions within the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors including Projects Director for Berwickshire Housing Association, Chief Executive of the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust, Chief Executive of the Scottish Community Foundation (now Foundation Scotland), Chief Executive of the Albion Trust and Senior Manager, Social Housing Finance, Dunfermline Building Society.
Alan’s experience covers a wide range of activities including the development of Scotland’s largest shared premises project for the charitable sector and the UK’s first community owned windfarm. He has delivered innovative housing developments including the first modular social housing developments in Scotland and the largest scale application of PV (photo voltaics) within the Scottish social housing sector. He has financed, developed and managed a broad range of community owned assets including housing, renewable energy projects, office, an island quarry, retail and café premises and until recently was Senior Associate at Campbell Thompson Associates.
Alan was the founding Chairman of Community Energy Scotland (CES), Scotland’s dedicated community energy charity, and Ombetja Yehinga Scotland, a small international development charity. He is a former Chair of Scottish Medical Aid for Cuba and former Director of Fyne Homes Housing Association and Gigha Renewable Energy Ltd.
